At Black Ankle Vineyards, we are dedicated to making wines of place—wines that express the unique flavors and atmosphere of the land on which they are grown. We have endeavored to reflect our wine making philosophy in our Tasting Room by designing a building that uses as many materials from our farm as possible, including wood, straw, soil, rain and sun. The building is framed with locally-milled wood that was harvested from our forest; its walls are insulated with straw bales grown on our site and finished with handmade plasters that are formulated largely with our own clay and water. We have also designed the building to be extremely eco-friendly. It has a passive solar design, with supplemental heat provided by a clean-burning masonry fireplace that is fueled with our wood, a living roof to capture and use rain water while providing excellent insulation in winter and naturally cooling the building in summer, and is constructed almost exclusively with local, sustainable, healthy materials.

Construction on the building began in November of 2007 and was completed in September of 2008. Pictures of the construction process are found in the following pages. For a more detailed account of how we incorporated our own materials into the construction, please click here.
