Wine of the Week: Black Ankle Syrah Passeggiata - Frederick County, Maryland

Sarah O'Herron and Ed Boyce:

After a week in France touring vineyards in Bourgogne, Beaujolais and Jura, you might be expecting a wine of the week reflecting that experience. Here it is. A Syrah grown and produced in Mount Airy, about 45 minutes from CWC. What's the connection? Great wine estates start with great people. Whether first generation or fifteenth, people with vision make memorable wine. As remarkable as it was to spend time in cellars built in the fifteenth century, it's equally remarkable to sense in a new vineyard and winery a vision and commitment to thrive for generations in the future.

Sarah O'Herron and Ed Boyce are just getting started - Black Ankle opened to the public last October. But what they've already put in bottle establishes a completely different benchmark for what is possible in Maryland wine.

Passeggiata is an Italian term for a leisurely evening stroll one takes after dinner. Technically speaking, this is Syrah made from juice drawn off the fermenting must that became their "regular" Syrah. In essence, they made two wines out of one - a lighter red that tastes great chilled; and a deeper, more robust red to drink with the main course.

Tasting Notes: 100% Syrah, a blend of '07/'08 - distinctly lighter than the regular Syrah cuve; fresh, penetrating berry/floral/spice smells and lingering flavors - unique, yummy.
$23

Thanks as always, and have a great 4th!
